Trade and Industry

Trade:

Most of the shops are installed along a north-south axis, the ancient road from Paris to Lyon (Doctor Privey Street, Republic Street, Désiré-Mathivet Street) and, naturally around the Abbey.
There are also a few shops and craftsmen along the quayside, close to the town centre (Centre Quay) as well as on a east-west axis (Jean Jaurès Street, as a continuation of the bridge over the river Saône) or along the national road (RN6) Paris-Lyon.

Most of the professions are represented: food, clothes and shoes, services (photographs, cobblers, computers...), bookshops, chemist's, car sellers and garages... all the professions of trade are about 220 establishments and give work to about 600 people.

Restaurants and hotels are very numerous with about 20 hotels (almost 500 rooms!) and about 20 restaurants too (more than 1,100 seats, not counting an establishment that can receive about 500 people for banquets!). If all of them have good services, let's say that some of them are very famous among gourmets. About accommodation, there's still a municipal camping quoted as 3 stars and several bed and breakfast.

Art galleries and antique dealers have naturally their place near the Abbey. The yearly antique dealers' show is a real success.

Parking places are numerous close to the Centre town (i.e. close to the shops). Most of these places are less than 300 m from the middle of Republic Street. Metered parking applies for 192 places since the beginning of February 2003.

Industry:

Industrial sites are mixed with living areas because Tournus has an ancient industrial tradition. However, young firms didn't hesitate to install their workshops in ancient buildings left by old firms from Tournus (Le Pas Fleury in the south), or on recent industrial estates (Les Joncs in the west, La Grande Condemine in the north).

Some of the firms in Tournus reach considerable sizes (in 2004, 37 were more than 10 jobs - 4 were more than 100).
The taller ones are now daughter companies of important international groups (American, English, French) but local families created them. Many smaller companies are still owned by local investors.
